1st Edition Porto Femme – International Film Festival
1. Organization
XX Element Project is Cultural Association that was born with the aim of promoting the cultural enrichment of the population in general and civic and social activities, with a special focus on the theme of women, promoting gender equality.
2. Finality
Porto Femme is an international women’s film festival. A place of exhibition and dissemination of multiple and diverse universes that put women in the center.
The Festival intends to create a space of visibility for the women of and in the cinematographic world. The event aims to be a point of sharing, debate and creation for all those who love the cinema.
3. Competitions, Admission Conditions and Submissions
International Competition
Films that meet the following conditions will be admitted for selection of the International Competition:
- Produced after January 1st, 2015;
- Not available on web;
- Films that aren’t completed (work in progress) won’t be accepted but only the final versions of them;
- Films directed by women, with no age limit or limit of works registered by director, or countries restriction;
- In international competition, works are accepted in the following categories:
FICTION – short and feature fiction films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.
ANIMATION – short and feature animation films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.
DOCUMENTARY – short and feature documentary films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.
EXPERIMENTAL – Experimental films with a maximum duration of 20 minutes.
All participants of this competition can only fit their works into one category.

“XX Element” Competition
Films that meet the following conditions will be admitted for selection of the “XX Element” Competition:
- Produced after January 1st, 2015;
- Not available on web;
- Films that aren’t completed (work in progress) won’t be accepted but only the final versions of them;
- Films made by men or co-directed between man and woman if it guarantees at least one of the following eligibility conditions:
- Films that focus on women’s themes;
- Films where women play a prominent role in the work (ex.: Producer, Screenwriter, Main Actress, Photography Direction, Editing).
- In “XX Element” Competition, works are accepted in the following categories:
FICTION – short and feature fiction films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.
ANIMATION – short and feature animation films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.
DOCUMENTARY – short and feature documentary films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.

National Competition

- Films directed by Portuguese women, with no age limit or limit of works registered by director, or countries restriction;
- In national competition, works are accepted in the following categories:
FICTION – short and feature fiction films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.
ANIMATION – short and feature animation films. Shorts may not exceed 30 minutes and feature films should be at least 50 minutes.

3.1. General Conditions
- Submissions have registration fee, according to the tables indicated in chapter 3.
- Submissions are made through one of the following platforms:
- Entry form (site)*;
- Filmfreeway;
- Film Festival Life;
- Festhome.
- Participants must submit their works in one of the competitions and categories presented (fiction, animation, documentary or experimental).
- The organization will not pay screening fees for the films submitted and selected at the festival.
*The payment is made trough Paypal to the portofemme@gmail.com email.
4. Technical Characteristics
1. Final Screening
It will only be accepted video files in .avi, .mov or .mpeg to be sent to the email: portofemme@gmail.com through WeTransfer (up to 2GB) or My air bridge (up to 20GB) services.
Notes:
- Films with dialogues in a language other than English must be subtitled in English and the .srt file with subtitles in English or text with timecode should also be sent to: portofemme@gmail.com.
- In cases where there are also subtitles in Portuguese, it should be send the srt file.
- The screening copies must be submitted by 14 March 2018, otherwise they will not be included in the Competitive Sessions Program or be screened the preview copy. In this case, the quality of the copy is the responsibility of the the producer / director.
2. Subtitling
The translation and subtitling of selected short and feature films will be ensured by the submitter responsible. If not, the films will be projected without any subtitling and in the original language.
5. Selection
- The pre-selection is the responsibility of an internal jury that is part of the Festival’s programming team. The final decision of the films in the contest is carried out by a jury that belongs to the Festival Organization Committee and other professionals invited by the Organization.
- The official selection will be communicated by email to those responsible for registration after February 28, 2018.
- The selection result will be available at portofemme.com and www.xxelementproject.pt.
- Except another indication, since the dissemination of women’s cinema is the main objective to be achieved by Porto Femme, the producers/directors of the awarded films, as well as the films of the Official Selection, when they sign up for the Festival, authorize the Organization to screen their films in sessions of a “PORTO FEMME” program.
- Directors/producers of the films of Official Selection allows the Organization to project on television or in digital media, with the purpose of mere festival’s news dissemination, excerpts from his works, which should never exceed 10% of its duration.
- Selected films may be object of acquisition proposals for the Portuguese market.
6. Juries
There will be a national and international jury that will be constituted with qualified professionals invited by the organization.
These juries decide without appeal, according to its own rules, based on general principles established by the Organization, reserving themselves, of course, the right not to award any or all prizes available to them.
None of the members of the different juries may be associated, for any purpose, with the production of the works presented.
7. Awards
The best work in each category will be awarded: Fiction (short and feature length), Animation (short and feature length), Documentary, Experimental, for each competition.
8. Final Considerations
All possible doubts and omissions of these Regulations shall be resolved by the Organization according to the rules of fairness and common sense.
Submission in PORTO FEMME 2018 reflects full and unreserved acceptance of the terms of this Regulation.
In case of any interpretation questions, it will be by the Portuguese version that these doubts will be clarified.
