Tribute to UMAR- União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta

For the second time, Porto Femme pays tribute to an institution with which we share the same values. In this edition the Sorority Award will be given to UMAR.

This award is a way to thank an institution that, since the first moment, has supported Porto Femme, since its first edition in 2018. A prize due to one of the institutions that has worked hardest to defend women's rights.

UMAR - União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta - is a feminist association founded on September 12, 1976. It emerged after the 25th of April 1974, with the conviction that we would only have a free country if all women and all people were free! UMAR also emerged in the period after the dictatorial regime and for this reason it was once called the União de Mulheres Antifascistas e Revolucionárias Union of Antifascist and Revolutionary Women.
Due to the international and national circumstances of successive attacks on the rights of women and other subordinated groups, in a global plan to deny their rights as if we had lives worth more than others, this designation would still be current today. Throughout almost 46 years, UMAR has managed to unite several generations of women, by opening spaces of intervention for younger women and update its intervention with a Feminist Agenda of new and old causes, such as the right to contraception and abortion, the fight against domestic violence, equality in political decisions and the international involvement in initiatives such as the World March of Women.

Today, UMAR combines a new generation of women with others who intensely lived the 1970’s women movements, in an exchange of ideas and experiences capable of establishing the links between generations, which are fundamental so that the historical memory is not lost, it allows progress within the framework of new times and new positions on feminisms.

UMAR was born out of life, out of women's struggles, and is intertwined with the very history of feminisms in Portugal.

This simple tribute will take place during this 5th edition’s Closing Ceremony, September 17th, starting at 10pm.
