The Status of Women in the Film and Audiovisual Sectors in Portugal
Porto Femme – International Film Festival, through XX Element Project – Cultural Association, in partnership with MUTIM – Women Working in Moving Images, conducted the study The Status of Women in the Film and Audiovisual Sectors in Portugal, with support from the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA).
Conducted by the Center for Communication and Cultural Studies at the Portuguese Catholic University, under the coordination of Catarina Duff Burnay, this study seeks to deepen our understanding of the realities faced by women working in the film and audiovisual industries in Portugal and of the gender inequalities that permeate the sector.
The research addresses issues such as job insecurity, wage inequalities, parenthood and work-life balance, discrimination and harassment, access to different roles and decision-making positions, as well as the portrayal of women in audiovisual narratives.
Participation in this project builds on the work carried out by Porto Femme to promote gender equality in film and the audiovisual sector, contributing to the production and dissemination of knowledge that can support reflection, debate, and change in the sector.
