HARVEST QUEEN

Synopsis:
Harvest Queen tells the story of a mysterious woman who appeared in the West of Portugal, in the beginning of the 20th century, but to whom no one has ever been able to see the face. At the same time, another woman tries to become a wine producer. The film proposes a reflection on the feminine and its connection to the land, but also a challenge for the viewer so he might question their own beliefs.
Biography:
Lúcia Pires was born in Trás-os-Montes, in 1988. She graduated in Cinema - Directing (2014), at the Lisbon's Theatre and Film School, where she participated in several projects as a director and editor. In 2012, she made her first short film, Peixes, and in 2014, the documentary Bilhó em Noite Feliz, applied to Panorama 2015-Portuguese Documentary Show. Professionally, her path goes through Cinema and Theater, as an editor, director, screenwriter, producer and actress. From 2014 to 2015, she worked as an editor at RosaFilmes. In 2016, she produced the documentary series Paraíso (Maria & Mayer), shown on RTP 2. In 2017, she edited the short film O Turno da Noite, by Hugo Pedro (Leopardo Filmes); she produced the theater work Gertrude - O Grito, text by Howard Barker, staged by Maria Duarte; she wrote and participated in the film Fauna, with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the GDA Foundation, with screening and honorable mention at the IndieLisboa ‘18 festival. In 2018, she worked as a producer and actress in the theater work Democracia (É Divertida!), texts by Agustina Bessa-Luís and Thomas Bernhard, staged by Maria Duarte; she was an actress in the Letras theater group, under the guidance of Ávila Costa; worked as a producer in the theater work, O Eterno Debate, by Teresa Coutinho, shown on RTP 2. In 2019, she participated in the editing of a short film by Rui Esperança, Os Inúteis, part of the IndieLisboa 2019 National Competition; she wrote a play Caídas do Teto, based on d’O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis, by José Saramago; she wrote a play A Mancha, integrated into the 4th edition of the Writing Laboratory for Theater of D. Maria II; participated as an actress in Ana Isabel Mariz's short film Matilde; she wrote, participated in and edited the short film A Rainha, between documentary and fiction, part of the national competition of the IndieLisboa Festival ’20 and the official selection for the Caminhos do Cinema Português ’20 festival. In 2020, she edited Hugo Pedro's new short film, O Pânico, produced by Ukbar Filmes; was an actress in the theater adaptation of the work O Eterno Debate, by Teresa Coutinho. In 2021, she is studying Theater - acting branch, at ESTC; she is an actress and cameraman in Teresa Coutinho's theater project Solo; and prepares her new short fiction film, Saturnina.

Synopsis:
The painter Ana Marchand always felt a bit dislocated in her family. The love of art and travel, where did she get those from? As a young woman she saw a travel book written by her uncle Maurizio Piscicelli and finally understood. Catarina Mourão (Pelas Sombras, A Toca do Lobo, O Mar Enrola na Areia) follows Ana’s familiar and spiritual journey. Who was Maurizio? Who is Ana? The face of one, the face of the other. Reincarnation are the several lives we live.
Biography:
I Studied Music, Law and Film (MA Bristol University). In 1998 I was a founder of Apordoc, Portuguese Documentary Association and started teaching Film and Documentary in 2000. In 2000 with another filmmaker (Catarina Alves Costa) we started Laranja Azul, an independent production company for creative documentary and visual arts in Lisbon. Synopsis
The repository for the myths and memories of a village on the Atlantic coast. The stories appear as if the oral tradition were the only narrative that remains, bringing to the present ancient and almost lost traditions.
Biography
Mariana Bártolo (1987, Portugal) is a filmmaker, performer and multimedia artist. She completed her studies at KHM - Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2020 and studied dance in Lisbon until 2009. Directed the short films Mansa (2021), Barbas de Baleia (2021), Interior (2017) and A Fábrica (2012) and also develops work in the areas of photography, installation, drawing and performance.

BUSTARENGA

Synopsis:
Every summer Ana goes to Bustarenga, a small mountain village in the interior of Portugal. At the age of 36, this Parisian woman of Portuguese origin is still single. The inhabitants of the village, worried about her future, make her understand that the clock is ticking. Ana listens to the advice and warnings of the villagers to find a Prince Charming according to the principles of the village.
Biography:
Ana Maria Gomes is a franco-Portuguese filmmaker, born in 1982 in France. She lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and went on to further study at Le Fresnoy, specializing in video art. Gomes’s work today focuses on the role of fiction in the construction of personal identities; her main artistic interest revolves around her inner circle and family in particular. In 2004, she directed her first short film Simomen, a portrait of her 14-year-old brother. Two years later she joined Le Fresnoy (from which she graduated in 2007) where she worked on several artistic projects including Teresa, a documentary that offers a jarring portrait of her childhood friend. The following year, with support from the Gulbenkian Foundation she produced Antichambre, a video installation in which she filmed teenagers in their bedrooms. In 2014, with financial backing from G.R.E.C (Groupe de Recherches et d’Essais Cinématographiques), she directed Antonio, Lindo Antonio, (Antonio, Dashing Antonio) a film about her uncle who left Portugal for Brazil 50 years ago – never to return. Her films have been shown in exhibitions and international festivals (Hors Piste at the Centre Pompidou, Locarno, Gaîté Lyrique, Jeu de Paume, Museum of Hunting and Nature in Paris, etc.). Her work has received support from artistic institutions including the G.R.E.C, the Gulbenkian Foundation, SCAM, DRAC, or the Centre National des Arts Plastiques. Her most recent work One, two, three, die is part of the French National Contemporary Art Fund Collection (FNAC). Gomes is currently a resident filmmaker with Casa de Velazquez in Madrid, Spain, working on a new production.

Synopsis:
An analysis of Alfred Hitchcock’s behaviour with his actresses in his movie sets. Taking archive pictures and intertwining them with images of an XXI century woman, exploiting our audio senses, an experimental look is created. This allows us to have a different perspective on a period of them in the filmmaking industry where many actresses were victims of a sexist panorama.
Biography:
With a degree in Video and Documentary Film from the Escola Superior de Tecnologias of Abrantes, Matilde Calado was born in Setubal. Her path as a director begins in 2017 with Registro de Nascimento, her first documentary short film. In 2018, she makes her debut in fiction, directing Quando For Tarde, a short film with a wide range of screenings: Top Indie Film Awards, in Japan, where she won an award for Best Editing; Porto Femme Festival, where it won the award for Best Fiction Short in 2020. Her last documentary short, Como Gado, has won multiple national and international awards. The exhibitions in New York, Lincoln Center and Tribeca Film Center, within the scope of the NYPSFF, should be highlighted.

THE LIFE WE KNOW

Synopsis:
In a hamlet of Portugal’s remote inland, between the rivers Douro and Tâmega, there live about thirty people. At the top of a hill, we find sisters Ana and Glória living in an isolated place which the baker, the fishmonger, the grocer, and their children visit once a week. Everything else comes from the soil, which the two sisters work from sunrise to sunset, amidst the strips of farmed land. We follow the agricultural cycle over the course of a year as the relationship between the director and the protagonists ripens. The veil is lifted on these women’s day-to-day lives and their deepest thoughts about life in the countryside, the only life they know.
Biography:
Cláudia Ribeiro was born in 1990, in Guimarães, in the North of Portugal, and currently lives in Porto. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Film and a Master’s in Anthropology - Visual Cultures. Her work is focused mainly on the concepts of culture and identity, moved by a constant questioning of human behaviour, memory, representation, and the concept of reality. The Life We Know is her debut in documentary film, the result of 7 months of painstaking fieldwork in a small inland village in northern Portugal.
HANDS OF SILVER

In March of 2019 my grandfather was 20 years old.
The following month he was 12.
Last week he was 30.
Today he is 86, and tomorrow he might be 20 again. I have only known him since he was 66,
but lately I have been getting to know him in a different way.
Biography:
Catarina Gonçalves was born in 1999, on the São Miguel island (Azores). She has a bachelor’s degree in Sound and Image by the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University, and she did a semester of Erasmus in the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent (Belgium). Her installation and videoart work has been exhibited at the Carlos Machado Museum (Azores), the final exhibition of the LUCA School of Arts, the Mayday Festival (Ghent) and the European Media Art Festival (EMAF) in Osnabruck (Germany). She collaborated in the production of the film The Happiest Man by Sofia Caetano in 2019. Her final project and first film, Mãos de Prata, won the third prize on the Prémios Sophia Estudante and was selected for the Vila do Conde Short Film Festival, Festival de Cine y Audiovisuales Equinoxio (Colombia), Porto Post Doc, Caminhos do Cinema Português Festival, Concordia Film Festival (Montreal) and Summer Night Series (New York). During 2021 and 2021 she will be working as resident artist at the Festival of Arts – Walk and Talk.

THE ART OF DELUSION

Synopsis:
The art of delusion is sculpted with images from a family archive from the 70s and 80s and sound clips from films. Madame Bovary is Flaubert's heroine and opens the hosts of this narrative exercise. Based on Ema Paiva's dialogue with her friend and confidant Pedro Lumiares in the film Vale Abraão by Manoel de Oliveira, we understand gender identity as a closed characterization of social values. Ema, who here represents Women in a broader sense, inherits a traditional life in a patriarchal society. Facing this oppression, Ema questions her condition and the society in which she operates. Thanks to the bovarism that integrates in each woman, the force of disobedience will burn the path that was once idealized for them.
Biography:
Claudia Varejão was born in Porto and studied at the Creativity and Artistic Creation Program of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in partnership with the German Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin and the São Paulo International Film Academy. She also studied Photography at AR.CO in Lisbon. Claúdia is the author of the short film trilogy Weekend, A Cold Day and Morning Light. Ama-san, a portrait of Japanese divers, was her feature debut, receiving dozens of awards around the world, followed by In The Darkness of the Theater I Take Off My Shoes, a film that shows the intimacy of a group of dancers in a dance company. Amor Fati is her latest film scheduled to premiere in 2020 and in Wolf and Dog, in development, she will return to fiction. Cláudia's films have been selected by and awarded at the most prestigious film festivals, including Locarno, Rotterdam, Visions du Reel, Cinema du Reel, Karlovy Vary, Art of the Real - Lincoln Center, among many others. Besides her work as a filmmaker, she developed a career as a photographer and she’s a guest professor at AR.CO and Catholic University of Porto. Her work, whether in film or photography, documentary or fiction, lives from its proximity to those portrayed.
